The No. 1-ranked U.S. women's water polo team survived a first-round ambush Monday to edge China 12-11 at the Yingdong Natatorium.
The United States played much of the second half without starting defender Elsie Windes, the former Beaverton High School star who didn't see action again after getting her second 20-second exclusion of the game

BEIJING -- Italy rallied from a two-goal deficit in the fourth quarter Wednesday at the Yingdong Natatorium to force a 9-9 tie with the United States in a Group A Olympic women's water polo game, but afterward the U.S. team shrugged off the result.
Italy tied it with 22 seconds left on Elisa Casanova's power play goal from point-blank range. The U.S. had the ball and one more chance, but decided to play it safe.
